Church Organizations

Our parish is blessed with many wonderful organizations. If you are interested in joining any of these organizations, please feel free to contact the church secretary for more information.

Our choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings. Our choir members are actively involved in many of the church functions and also host events throughout the year. Our choir also attends and participates in concerts across the United States and Canada as part of the Serbian Singing Federation. Our choir has also represented our church in various non-denominational programs and performed for charitable causes.

Our junior choir is for any child between the ages of 6 and 15 who wish to learn Orthodox Liturgical music and as well as folk Serbian songs. Practices are held on Sundays after Divine Liturgy and are under the direction of Janice Smargie. The Junior Choir has participated in the Serbian Singing Festival, as well as major feast days of the church.

Sunday Church School classes are held before liturgy on Sundays for children of pre-kindergarten age through grade twelve from September until our Church’s Slava (Feast Day) in mid-May. The curriculum is based on materials from the Orthodox Christian Education Commission.

Our annual Church School Day Camp is held for 2 to 3 days during the summer onsite for all pre-school and upper school aged children. Our camp focuses on activities and lessons centering on a chosen theme or specific topic. Activities at day camp include morning prayer, religious instruction with our parish priest, and review of fundamentals, cooking, music, arts and crafts and games.

Klub Karadjordje is our men’s group at St. Nicholas Church. Their mission is to promote the Serbian Orthodox faith and heritage for the youth of our parish, to support the church and its axillary organizations, and to institute various maintenance and improvement projects in the church complex. To reach their goals, Klub Karadjordje sponsors several fundraisers throughout the year, which include the sale of remembrance plaques, an annual golf outing, an annual Valentine’s Day Dance, and Lenten Fish Fries. Members also schedule events during the year for fellowship.

Our St. Petka Kolo is an organization of women of the parish who offer their time, love, and hospitality to the church whenever and however they are able. The members donate their time and skills to prepare food for many of the church banquets and raise funds to acquire items needed for the church. Together with the other women’s groups (Eastern American Diocese’s Federation of Circles of Serbian Sisters) throughout our Diocese, our Kolo also helps maintain St. Sava Camp in Shadeland, PA.

Our St. Nicholas Tamburitzans group strives to preserve and perpetuate the heritage and traditions of the Serbian (and the Balkans) folk culture through tamburitza music, song, and dance.  The group is comprised of students between the ages of 6 and 18 and include members from other Serbian Orthodox Churches that do not have a group of their own. Our group performs locally for different affairs, events, and charitable causes. When the opportunity arises, our children travel to various parts of the United States and Canada representing our church. Since joining the Serbian National Folklore Federation (SNFF) in 2000, the Tamburitzans have participated in SNFF events across the continent as well. Additionally, each year our group hosts a concert followed by a beautiful reception at our church.

St. Sava Camp is a children’s educational and cultural program of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Eastern America which our children may attend during the summer. During July and August, Shadeland Camp is open for four weeks to students ages 7-18 years and provides a chance to enjoy a week fostering lasting fellowships and friendships with other Serbian Orthodox children from the eastern United States and Canada while deepening their experience and understanding of their faith and heritage. Campers experience daily Orthodox worship and have many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, sports and games. Organized hikes, softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, boating, fishing, swimming, arts and crafts, religious classes, kolo dancing, a visit to a water park, cookouts, talent shows, etc. are just some of the fun things in which the campers are involved.

The last week of camp, referred to as “Tambura Week,” is set aside for learning to perform Serbian music and dance. Campers of this week perform a full set of song and dance at the annual Shadeland picnic.
